Well, i have always believed in story rather then gameplay.
The reason is simple. Most people play a game is because they want to uncover all the parts of the story. Thats one of the main motivation that keeps people playing that game.
Of course having a good gameplay is vital as well. You can just have a good story but in a text format. That will discourage people from playing.
All in all, a good story still stands. Take the Final Fantasy series for example.
The reason why most people recommand FF7 as the BEST final fantasy is because of its story.
The gameplay throughout most of the FF series are the same. However, all of them have different stories.
FF10 definitely have better graphics then FF7, but more people feel more towards FF7 because of its story.
So, story is more important then gameplay to me

My favourite games
XenoGears
This is my all time favourite game since primary 3-4.
This game was released in 1998.
The reason why I loved this game is because this game has an excellent storyline, character development, gameplay, fight scenes and graphics.
Xenogears has a unique feel to it. Each character having their own secerts and mysteries. From the start of the game to the end, the story makes you feel for the characters and it keeps making you wanting to play more and more to unravel the secerts of the characters.
Xenogears' storyline is a unique one. Xenogears is the 5th out of the 6 XenoSeries. However, it was the first game that kick started the XenoSeries. The starting part of xenogears begains like any other common storyline, the main character released his "inner self" (which will be explained later in the game that its not really his inner self) and destroys the village that he has stayed. When the story goes into the middle part of the game, the stories intensifies and many questions and unknowns are being asked to the player.
Close to the final part of the game, the story turns darker but it still manages to keep the viewer interested in the game.
Xenogears' soundtrack is probably the best that i have heard. The soundtracks are created by Yasunori mitsuda. The soundtracks for xenogears blends very finely with the game. This is probably another major reason why the game is so good.
The other game i loved is
Super robot wars
Despite not changing its original TBS gameplay, this game can still last for 15 years and its still going strong.
The latest instalment of SRW is alpha 3. It is one of the most sold games on the PS2.
SRW is popular as it brings in old school robots like mazinger, macross, dancougar etc etc... and the latest robots such as gundams, Full metal panic etc.. etc.. and mixes their storylines together. The characters in each series also interact with each other.
SRW is mainly about graphics. The gameplay of SRW has been the same throughout all its series. However, its graphics is being constantly upgraded. SRW alpha 3 boasts one of the best graphics in the PS2.
What makes this game very addictive is for every SRW series, even though you can have the same mecha, its attack graphics is always different. The way that the writers merged all the storylines of different mecha series is awesome as well.
SRW also has its own storyline which the ending is usually the last boss of the game. This is probably to prevent favourtism to any mecha series.
However good SRW may be. It is still a game only for mecha lovers. If you hate robots, you will probably never find this a nice game to play.
